As you have read by now, CMU-Q likes to party, and the end of the semester is a big deal for students and faculty. Every year, a themed party is thrown and everyone is invited. This year, it was a red carpet Hollywood-themed party! The green spine (this is what they call the big middle area of CMU’s bulding) was transformed to look like an event fit for all of Hollywood! Here’s a shot of the tables as I left my office and headed downstairs to meet up with friends and get the party started:
In the above picture, you can see the red carpet that we entered through, and that section of cardboard was a space for interviews. There were two students who were interviewing their fellow students, as well as faculty and it was fun. I love that the balloon arch is black and gold! I don’t think that was intentional though 😉
First, we had cocktails and passed appetizers outside of the red carpet, then we finally were allowed to enter the red carpet, where there were spotlights flashing and we were projected onto a big screen. It was really fun!
We selected a table with all of our friends and there were some speeches given, and then it was time to eat! The event was catered by the Four Seasons, and there were delicious food stations! There was a carving station, a sushi station, indian station, salad station, and of course a dessert station. It was delicious!
There was also a trivia contest. They showed 20 questions related to Hollywood and films on the big screen, and you had to answer as many as you could. We answered a pretty good percentage of them and won a free CMU-Q t-shirt! 🙂 There were also awards for best dressed. Dave and I had no idea what to expect, so we did not get super dressed up, but some people did and it was neat to see.
Up for auction were some fun cutouts of actors – such as Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, Charlie Chaplin, Mike Myers as Austin Powers, and even Hannah Montana. The auction money went to the students, so the Asst Dean of Academic Affairs bid 10 riyal (2.67 USD) on all the cutouts! It was really nice of him! Dave put down 100 riyal (26.70 USD) for the Jack Sparrow one, and surprise, surprise, we ended up with it at the end of the night! Here’s a picture of it – with me and my friend Marjorie kissing Jack 🙂
We are so cool, ha ha. Captain Jack Sparrow is now hanging out in Dave’s office, for the time being. Not sure where he will go when classes start!
All in all, it was a really fun party, and a nice time to hang out with our friends before they all headed home for the Christmas holiday. As always, there are a few more pictures to be found here:
